Seven of Wands
Description: A large warrior stands his ground and protects his home, shown behind him, from invaders attacking at a crumbling wall.
In a Reading: This card is about taking a stand or defending your position or beliefs. It could be about standing up for what you believe, but it is more like a determination to walk to the beat of your own drum without worrying what someone else thinks. The energy is not one that goes out and gets into other people's personal business, but it is about standing firm when someone gets into yours.
When this card appears in a future position it speaks of a challenge that you are about to encounter where you may have to defend yourself or your beliefs. As a tarot card reader, I drew this card while sitting at a table in a public place offering to read tarot cards for people at a local fair. The question I asked was about how the energy of the day (or moment) looked. The seven of wands showed up. Not long thereafter, I was approached by a man who, as politely as he could, sought to educate me about the evil of the tarot and suggested how the devil might be behind the power of the cards. I invited him to sit down and discuss it further or (heaven forbid) have a reading, and he of course would not do so, but when he had first appeared, I thought to myself, "I have been expecting you."
Regarding your occupation: This card encompasses all kinds of self employment. It has a connection with wisdom, knowledge and education. If you can muster enough self confidence and decide to strike out on your own and quit your job to work for yourself, you will likely be successful because you proceed unhindered by what others think or tell you that you should do. You are your own council and if someone else has a problem with what you are doing, as long as they don't get in your way directly, you don't let it slow you down. If, on the other hand, someone tries to prevent you from doing what you want to do, you will stand firm and defend your rights and you will successfully overcome the opposition. You have taken ownership of, and earned the right to decide for yourself and proceed as you choose. Keep your focus on the creative side of work and don't loose site of your vision.
Regarding Romance: You are tired of compromise and feeling stifled in your current relationship and in relationships in general. The appearance of this card indicates that it may be time for you to take a stand on your beliefs and on your position and intentions if you have not done so already. It is time to get clear on who you are and what you want. On the other hand, it could also mean that you are on the defensive too much and may need to evaluate the reasons why. If you feel vulnerable you might be too quick to resist and defend trivial things that make for a stressful relationship. Look to the surrounding cards, the question asked and then ask yourself what is really important and worth defending.
Regarding your health: Stick to your plan to get some exercise and diet or whatever you are doing to maintain your good health. If you do that, your immune system will rally to your defense in the face of any bug going around. You benefit from any kind of training that utilizes both your body and your mind, like yoga, martial-arts, skating, skiing and other activities that require skill rather than repetitive routines.
General Advice: This energy is the energy used when you are standing up for your beliefs. You will be tested and challenged by those who seek to convert you to their way of thinking. Every person has a good reason for their beliefs and it does not hurt to listen to someone and then weigh it against what feels right to you, but if they get too pushy or threatening, defend your beliefs in a reasonable exchange and stand your ground. This is not the time to tuck your tail and yield to pressure while you are doing what you know is right. To keep silent could create an appearance of agreement.
Reversed: You may want to defend what is yours but you are having a problem doing that because you lack determination and confidence or you have let yourself go. You may not be clear on why you feel the way you do, but the feelings are there just the same and intellectual logic cannot change them. Start first from the feelings involved and your intuition, and you will discover the answers.
The defending warrior in this card was taken from this painting called "Casimir the Restorer returning to Poland." by Kazimierz Odnowiciel wracający do Polski. (1887)
